Happy New Year!

I went to an open mat class on Monday, and it ended up being a pretty bad class.  We had the choice of gi or no gi, so I chose gi.  It started out OK.  Vlad showed me 4 submissions; Rear-Naked choke, Cross-Collar choke, Americana and Kimora.  Then he went to roll with someone else.  I was just sitting there, and our instructor asked me to roll with him.  I literally forgot everything I know and could not do anything.  I got too nervous.   I felt like an idiot for the rest of the class, and now I feel like I really suck.  I feel like I do better when I roll with Vlad, and he says that I don’t suck, but I still feel like I am not doing very well.  I hear this is part of the cycle that people go through.

Vlad and I are trying to get some mats for at home.  We started bidding on some on ebay, but did not win.  We will keep trying though, because I think it would be awesome to have mats at home.  I would love to be able to practice.

It’s hard not to get discouraged, but you’re just starting out – I’ve been training for 2 1/2 years and I still feel like I suck sometimes. Ok, lots of times.
Hang in there – the tough days are totally worth it once you get to the point when things start to click.

    Hey Noelle(and Vlad),
Really enjoying your blog. I am also a comparatively new BJJ practitioner (got started around May of last year)at age 39. Absolutely love the art and have decided that my goal for 2009 is to up my game and, hopefully, test for my blue belt by the end of the year. In order to track my progress, vent my spleen, talk about my aches and pains, etc. I would like to invite you to check my blog out if you get a chance. It is very new, so not a lot of content yet but I am trying to add to it most days.

    Matt
